This supplement has also been reported to have benefits for: nerve health, improved blood pressure, fibromyalgia and has been used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It has been suggested that benfotiamine contains many anti-aging properties that help the body as well. Truly a "Miracle" supplement that is not truly appreciated by the medical profession.
What Benfotiamine Does:
With benfotiamine, the sustained increase of Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP) and the resulting activation of the enzyme transketolase in the system can produce beneficial effects on general nerve health, sciatica, fibromyalgia, general ageing, other nerve conditions, vascular health, blood pressure and coronary health.
Benfotiamine (a lipid-soluble form of vitamin B-1*) was developed in Japan in the late 1950's to treat alcoholic fibromyalgia, sciatica and other painful nerve conditions. It was patented in the U.S. in 1962, and has been in widespread use in Japan since 1962 and in Europe since 1992 with encouraging results.
Fibromyalgia Diets: Magnesium and Thiamine
You need to consider vitamin B-1, or thiamine. This vitamin can be easily ingested through a the synthetic supplement, benfotiamine, which in testing has not caused adverse affects on other medications. Consult with a medical professional to find out which combination of vitamins and minerals in your diet and supplements will work best for you and your fibromyalgia symptoms.
IS IT SAFE?
Information from the patent filed in 1962 indicates that lab mice were able to tolerate 22 times more benfotiamine by body weight than common vitamin B-1 (thiamine hydrochloride). You may view this data on page 2 of the U.S. patent (see Table III) using the link provided, below. Given the comparison to the toxicity of vitamin B-1, it's interesting to know more about that compound's toxicity.

Proper Use of Benfotiamine
HOW MUCH SHOULD I USE?
Benfotiamine, in testing, has not caused adverse affects on other medications. Follow the directions on the label. Do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Benfotiamine has no known interactions with prescription medications and, in turn, helps replenish the body with thiamine. There are some prescription drugs that will cause a B-1 deficiency if no supplements are taken.
Benfotiamine is lipid-soluble (or fat-soluble) and this quality means the idea of "overdosing" is nearly impossible. It metabolizes quickly and does not build up in the human body. There are certain individuals who require a higher dose to be most effective. Those who love caffeine, who are pregnant, who smoke or drink alcohol may have a B-1 deficiency.
There are many forms of this product, but capsules seem to be the most common outside of the food groups. The effects are noted to take anywhere from two to three weeks to fully develop. If you are interested in starting a regimen of benfotiamine, or any supplement, consult your physician first.
One approach is to begin with a relatively high daily usage which one then steps down to a maintenance level after 6-12 weeks. E.G., 300-450mg. daily for four weeks, then stepping down to 200-300mg. daily for four to six weeks, then beginning a maintenance usage of 100-150 mg. daily.
Another approach is to begin with a relatively lower daily use amount, then step it up every two weeks until a maximum perceived beneficial effect is achieved. A typical regime would begin with 200-300mg. daily for two weeks, then increase to 300-450mg. daily, then possibly move to 400-600mg. daily. A common median dosage is 600mg. per day. Some use half that amount and others use twice that amount per day. The point here is that benfotiamine is safe at any reasonable daily usage level, an individual should merely find the level that produces the maximum beneficial effect without reaching a point of diminishing return beyond which the excess amount is wasted.
